  • •Toxic substance in cigarette smoke and its harmful effects for human healthy and environment were critically reviewed.•Synergistic effects and mechanisms of various adsorption materials were discussed.•Challenges limiting real applications of adsorption efficiency were put forward.•Recent advancements and future perspectives of selective adsorption materials were proposed. Cigarette smoke, a complex mixture containing over 7000 chemical compounds, 86 of which are thought to be carcinogenic have attracted much attention due to their serious hazards on human health and environmental pollution. In order to reduce the levels of major carcinogens in cigarette smoke include nicotine, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, tobacco-specific nitrosamines, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde, a variety of advanced adsorption materials has been used to minimize this harm effect. Compared with other methods, adding adsorption materials to the filter is one of the best measures to reduce the cigarette harm. However, the application of different kinds of adsorption materials in cigarettes filter and their effects on cigarette quality have been rarely reviewed. The current review fills up this gap and covers the latest research advances on different kinds of adsorption materials. Additionally, challenges and prospects in the development and implementation of cigarette filter are also addressed.
