  • In this work, Sr3B2O6:Tb3+ phosphors with various concentrations of Tb3+ have been fabricated by combustion method and the prepared samples reach a single phase of rhombohedral structure. Particles of the synthesized samples tended to agglomerate and form a cluster. Thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves of the Sr3B2O6:Tb3+ materials were measured and the shape of TL glow curves is similar with two TL peaks at 416 K and 536 K. Activation energies of two TL peaks in the SB:1.0 Tb sample are in the 0.70–0.72 eV region and in the 1.13–1.39 eV region which were calculated via various methods such as the initial increment method, the various heating rates (VHR) method and the whole TL glow curve method. The deep TL peak at 536 K was considered to relate to the 4f ground state of Tb3+ which acts as a hole-trapping center. •+ Sr3B2O6:Tb3+ phosphors with different concentration of Tb3+ have been successfully synthesized by the combustions method.•+ Activation energies were found by three various methods and values are in the 0.70–0.72 eV and the 1.13–1.39 eV region.•+ The TL peak in the 1.13–1.39 eV region is suggested to impurity formed by the Tb3+ dopant.•+ The Tb3+ ion acts as a hole-trapping center in the TL process of the Sr3B2O6:Tb3+ phosphors.
