Tracheobonchomalacia (TBM) may be a life-threatening airway condition in pediatric patients. Multiple surgical interventions exist for TBM, ranging from open to endoscopic procedures, depending in part on the etiology of the TBM. Recently the role of airway stenting has seen a resurgence with the development of bioabsorbable stents which may temporize TBM and allow for improvement over time or function as a bridge to definitive intervention (Griffiths et al. [1]). This option is available in Europe but requires emergency or compassionate use exemption in the United States.
We present a patient with single ventricle physiology s/p PDA stent, single pulmonary artery (left), single bronchus (left), vascular airway compression that had a respiratory arrest upon extubation post cardiac catheterization and required ECMO support. The patient underwent a novel multidisciplinary approach with bioabsorbable stent placement and multimodality imaging for evaluation.
