  • In many of the previous literatures, this is indicated that, the concrete is moderate in the compressive properties but lack in tensile properties. In order to compensate the lack on the tensile strength properties, fibres can be inserted in to the plain cement concrete. In the recent studies, the basalt fibres grasped the attention of researchers among the other types of fibres. Basalt fibre is having lot of advantages such as high strength, high elastic modulus, better thermal stability, good chemical stability, effective sound insulation, and electrical characteristics. For this study, the basalt fibre are incorporated into the concrete in the volume fraction of 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5% and 3% for M 30 grade concrete. In order to investigate the compressive strength and split tensile strength of the basalt fibre reinforced concrete, cube specimens of 150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm and cylinder specimens of 150 mm × 300 mm are casted and cured in water curing for the period of 7 days and 28 days. The test results indicating that, 1% of volume fraction of basalt fibres in to the concrete is found to be optimum in enhancing the strength properties and further increase in the volume fraction of basalt fibres has a decreasing trend in a drastic manner.
