L’existence d’interconnexions neurales entre les trois premiers nerfs cervicaux et le noyau trigéminal cervical est décrite dans la littérature scientifique. C’est sur cette base théorique et neurophysiologique que certains thérapeutes manuels expliquent l’influence de l’articulation crânio-cervicale (ACC) sur le fonctionnement de l’ATM. L’objectif est de discuter de l’implication des voies trigémino-cervicales sur l’ATM, en comparant les effets d’une manipulation d’une dysfonction articulaire de l’ACC et d’une dysfonction articulaire thoracique sur la distance interincisives. Les manipulations de l’ACC et thoracique engendrent une même augmentation à court terme de la distance interincisives. Cela suppose que les voies trigémino-cervicales n’ont pas été spécifiquement impliquées, et qu’il y aurait d’autres réflexes neurophysiologiques postmanipulatifs non décrits nécessitant des investigations complémentaires.

The existence of neural interconnections between the first three cervical nerves and the trigeminal nucleus is described in the scientific literature, and through these theoretical and physiological data, some manual therapists explain the influence of the craniocervical joint (CCJ) on the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) function. The objective of this study is to discuss the involvement of the strigemino-cervical pathways on the TMJ function by comparing the effects of manipulation of a CCJ, with a manipulation of a thoracic joint (TJ), on the interincisal distance. CCJ and TJ manipulations produce the same short-term increase of the interincisal distance. This suggests that the trigemino-cervical pathways were not specifically involved in the increase of interincisal distance, and that there would be others neurophysiological reflexes following spinal manipulation which requires further investigation.
