  • Lanthanide isothiocyanate complexes with 1,3-dithiane-1-oxide (DTSO) were synthesized by reaction of the lanthanide isothiocyanate with DTSO in ethanolic solution. The complexes were characterized by CHN microanalytical procedures and complexometric titration with EDTA. Data obtained are in good agreement with the proposed formula [Ln(NCS) 3(DTSO) 5] (Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Tb). IR absorption spectra were interpreted in terms of coordination of DTSO through the oxygen and the isothiocyanate anions through the nitrogen atom. The emission spectrum obtained at 77 K for the Eu(III) compound suggests a C 2v symmetry for the coordination polyhedron. The structure of Tb(III) compound was determined by single crystal X-ray analysis and showed that the crystals are triclinic, space group P1, a=8.178(1) Å, b=11.552(1) Å, c=12.177(1) Å, α=67.43(1)°, β=75.78(1)°, γ=69.86(1)°. The Tb(III) ion is octacoordinated to five oxygen atoms of five DTSO moieties and three nitrogen atoms of three isothiocyanate anions, in a square anti-prism geometry.
