Mass transfer performance of a Karr reciprocating plate column was studied with water (continuous) - phenol (solute) - VivaSol 2046 + 10v% tributyl phosphate (dispersed), for both extraction and stripping processes. Drop size distribution and concentration profiles along the column height were measured experimentally. A combined model accounted for flow non-ideality in both phases. A backflow model to describe backmixing for the continuous phase and a population balance model to consider the forward mixing for the dispersed phase was applied. The model was in good agreement with the experimental data and was applied to various flow rates. A concentration jump was observed at the continuous phase inlet when backmixing was obvious while no jump at dispersed phase inlet. The combined model provided better predictions comparing with the backflow model for both phases. Finally, the model was validated and compared with the measured Sauter mean diameter and concentrations for Karr columns with different diameters.
