Process intensification (PI) is a class of approaches designed to transform traditional chemical equipment into smaller, more selective, and more energy efficient processes. The field has found success with new unit operations in a number of applications, but more can be done to broaden the implementation of PI solutions in chemical plants. To address the full scope of chemical process industry needs, process intensification must deliver solutions that achieve scale by using the underlying guiding principles of PI to expand the space beyond the initial focus of the field. This paper outlines these needs: the industrial constraints for implementing PI technology at scale, the potential applications underserved by current technology, and the methodologies needed to effectively screen and design PI processes.
