• Microalgae have been recently recognised as tools for high value products like polyunsaturated fatty acids, pigments or polysaccharides. Nevertheless, not much modelling work has been done until now. Modelling of kinetics in standard photo-bioreactors is difficult because of strong high gradients and lacking control of light flux. An overview over the existing reactor types is given with focus on their qualification to gain data for modelling. For the study otmicroalgae kinetics and for modelling purposes a new kind of photo-bioreactor has been designed. With the aid of the new reactor, kinetics of microalgae growth and product formation under controlled conditions are investigated.
