• Some trans-(RR,SS)-[CoCl9323-tet)amine)]ZnCl 4 salts (amine = NH 3 MeNH 2 and imidazole) have been prepared and characterised by C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The ammine complex has been resolved into the (SS) and (RR) (not isolated) forms using arsenyl tartrate. Mercury(II)-assisted aquation rates for these complexes and values of 10 4 k Hg (298 K) (μ = 1.0 M) are 5.75, 98.4 and 37 M −1 s −1, in the above order. Base hydrolysis rates have been measured using a pH-stat for amine = NH 3, MeNH 2 and values of 10 −4 k OH (298 K) (μ = 0.1 M) are 3.48 and 76.4 M −1 s −1 respectively. These rate data are interpreted in terms previously established structure-reactivity patterns.
