The number of uredospores of
Hemileia vastatrix Berk. & Br. in the air at times which are critical for seasonal build-up of infection is excessively low; this, together with the effect of spore density on infection, suggests that wind plays no part in dispersal. Rain splash, on the other hand, disperses spores in quantity, the numbers being in direct proportion to the amount and intensity of individual showers. Showers in excess of approximately one-third of an inch are necessary for effective dispersal. A study of the distribution of spores on leaves within the coffee bush after rainfall of varying intensity confirms the close correlation between rainfall and spore movement, and shows that this movement is limited in range.
