  • Metabolism and rumen studies with isonitrogenous uromol or groundnut cake (GNC)—wheat straw rations, with or without maize, were conducted in a factorial design on male buffaloes. Both untreated and alkali-treated (3.0% NaOH) wheat straw were used as roughage in these rations. With alkali-treated straw rations the dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and crude fibre (CF) digestibilities significantly improved ( P < 0.01) over those with untreated straw. The CP digestibility was significantly lower ( P < 0.01) in the uromol—straw than GNC—straw ration, but with the addition of maize in the supplement, the difference in the CP digestibility was significant ( P < 0.01) due only to the presence of alkali-treated or untreated straw. The rumen ammonia level remained lower with uromol—alkali—treated straw rations than with the untreated straw rations. A positive N-retention was present with all uromol rations except the uromol—12.5% maize—untreated straw ration. This suggested that N from uromol was available for degradation in the rumen and subsequent utilization by the animals. However, the values of apparent digestible OM suggested that the limitations of the available energy in the uromol—straw ration could sometimes prevent the optimum rumen microbial protein synthesis and thus the availability of CP to the animals. Hence, it was concluded that, in the presence of adequate available energy through digestible organic matter, the uromol—straw combinations can be safely used as a basal ration for ruminants.
