Heavy ion applications are investigated at various laboratories around the world. They mainly benefit from damages inflicted to materials by impinging ions. In this contribution I try to illustrate perspectives offered by such applications by describing the GANIL example: from initial activities to market research and to actual status. Even if, from my viewpoint, the field of applications is not blooming as we dream it should, the efforts are worth continuing.
