Computer-based analysis and visualization of three-dimensional objects generated from two-dimensional slice series is gaining importance in anatomical research. In this paper, algorithms for the analysis and 3D visualization of microvascular blood vessel networks are presented. First, a preprocessing algorithm for automatic composition of high resolution images is described. Then, an automatic segmentation of the capillary network is performed. The 3D visualization of the blood vessel system is based on a ray-tracing algorithm in combination with Phong's illumination model. The chosen volumetric object representation is particularly appropriate to realize clipping operations, a useful tool to analyze internal structures of the capillary networks. The algorithms for visualization and manipulation of three-dimensional objects (
e.g., rotation, clipping, zooming,
etc.) in medical image data are integrated in the software system
VolumeView, which has been developed at the Institut für Medizinische Informatik.
