The gastroprotective effects of
Jacaranda puberula
Cham., Bignoniaceae, a tree native to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, were evaluated using two models of acute ulceration in mice: acidified ethanol- and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory-induced ulceration. The mice were divided into five groups and treated orally with vehicle, carbenoxolone, or hydroalcoholic extract obtained from the tested plant (3, 30, or 300 mg/kg). Results showed that the doses of 300 mg/kg decreased both acidified ethanol- and indomethacin-induced ulceration by 89% and 33%, respectively, compared to the vehicle (
p
< 0.001). These results were similarly to those obtained for the carbenoxolone-treated group. Gastroprotection was confirmed by histological analysis. The gastroprotective mechanisms involve reductions in inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, including a reduction in myeloperoxidase activity, along with increases in glutathione levels and superoxide dismutase activity. Jacaranone and verbascoside were identified as the active components.
