  • This paper briefly describes a unique nursing management program, Education for First‐Level Nursing Management (EFFLNM), which combines the advantages of a short, compressed course with those of an extended‐time course. Three six‐month cycles of this program were funded by the U.S. Public Health Service. Each cycle consisted of 13 days of workshops, three 90‐minute teleconferences and telephone coaching by project staff members. Formative evaluation data from end‐of‐day and end‐of‐workshop assessments were used to monitor and improve lesson content and teaching methods both within and across cycles. This paper also describes an on‐going evaluation process that made it possible to adapt content to a mature, experienced audience's needs.
