- Highlights • Microenvironment factor S100A4 stimulates transition to the invasive phenotype in melanoma. • Acquisition of the invasive phenotype coincides with dedifferentiation and metabolic reprogramming. • A switch from mitochondrial oxidation to glycolysis provides survival benefit to invasive cells. • Reversal of the metabolic switch sensitizes the invasive cells to growth inhibition and apoptosis.
