  • Traditionally, critics have not held Grillparzer's comedy Weh dem, der lügt! in very high esteem. With the notable exception of Ruth Angress, they have regarded it as an anomaly in his overall oeuvre and viewed it as largely unrelated to those dramas written after his withdrawal from the theater. While Angress has argued convincingly for its backward-looking face, this essay endeavors to examine the close relationship shared by the comedy and the three completed final tragedies: Libussa, Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburg, and Die Jüdin von Toledo. The analysis first establishes the unique analogies between Weh dem, der lügt! and each of the three posthumous plays and then outlines those features which the four works have in common. Since such a comparison demonstrates the forward-looking face of Weh dem, der lügt!, this essay makes a case for the comedy's pivotal status in the evolution of Grillparzer's dramas.
