  • The author of this paper described the heraldic signs of Senj-Modruš Bishop Ivan Krstitelj Ježić who belonged to the well-known noble family from Novalja. The Ježić family from Novalja were rich traders and landlords and they received their nobility status and coat of arms in 1791 from the Austrian Emperor Leopold I, when Ivan Krstitelj Ježić was already bishop. On the shield, which is cut into quarters, of the coats of arms of the Bishop Ježić there are the following heraldic symbols: the Maltese red cross, golden cross in a shape of an anchor, with dove in flight with an olive branch and a pelican. All heraldic symbols of his coat of arms, on stones and those with colours, expressed the time in which Bishop Ježić lived.Beside the official bishop’s coat of arms, on his gravestone was carved the bishop’s coat of arms and inscription in Latin with the same figures in the coat of arms as in the coloured coat of arms. The mentioned heraldic signs expressed the language of symbols and signs and from the artistic point of view they have some characteristic of the art style of the time. Symbolism in heraldic figures which are in the shield determine theological, philosophical and aesthetic values which was embodied in the figure and work of the Senj-Modruš Bishop Ivan Krstitelj Ježić.Alongside the coat of arms, the author gives an additional two inscriptions from Senj’s cathedral related to the name and work of the Bishop Ježić, a portrait from the gallery of portraits of Senj-Modruš Bishops from the Museum of Sacral Heritage of Senj and the text from the French medal of the Legion of Honour.
