  • Introduction: Viruses attacking bacteria, known as bacteriophages, were discovered around century ago. Their potential use in medicine had been studied ever since, mainly in Soviet union. First therapeutical usage of phage therapy was tested even before penicilin discovery, but was overshadowed with the dawn of antibiotic era. Aim: Theoretical description of actual views on phage therapy as a rehashed treatment method of bacterial infections. Knowledge summary of novel literature concerning this therapeutic modality describing latest state of affairs. Core: Rediscovery of bacteriophages as a potential therapy came at the beginning of this century, due to alarming spread of antibiotic resistance reported in literature. Our review describes phage therapy from historic point of view, outlines process of isolation and preparation of suitable bacteriophages along with its pharmacological properties and pros/cons of this therapeutical modality. Conclusion: Short overview of relevant clinical studies describes current experiences with bacteriophages in the treatment of serious infectious diseases. This suggest wider use of phage therapy in clinical practice which, according to optimistic assumptions, will be established in this decade.
