  • In the Margaret-island, a large-seized oval stone can be seen on the promenade leading to the park, there, where the road turns at 45° angles to the left, opposite to the main entrance of the Palatinus-bath (Fig. 1). The architect A. Laczkovics discovered some runic signs on it at the beginnings of the nineties. He fixed his observations in photographs and drawings and informed of his discovery I. Erdélyi, professor of archaeology who already discovered and published several Avar runic inscriptions. Both Laczkovics and Erdélyi were aware of the fact that a forged inscription written in Hungarian runic script became already known in the Margaret-island in the twenties. Therefore, they handled the new discovery with due caution. Erdélyi himself also examined the stone and the inscription to be seen on it, he also prepared photographs of it, than he handed over the whole documentation to me, as I already attempted to interpret the Avar runic inscriptions discovered and published by him earlier.
