• L’article propose une analyse du texte « Ultima Verba », écrit par Paul Valéry et paru dans un hebdomadaire gaullist immédiatement après la capitulation allemande. Il s’agit de la singulière contribution de l’écrivain à l’édition du journal qui alors annonçait la fin du conflit armé en Europe. Son énonciation poétique extrêmement complexe institue et prononce (ceux qui [ne] devaient [pas] être) les derniers mots du vainqueur de la guerre, en établissant ainsi une étrange célébration révélatrice de la proximité entre le poète et le souverain au sommet où le rituel de re-fondation du monde commun est alors mis en scène. Cette proximité entre l’écrivain et le vainqueur met en question la pertinence même de l’acte d’écrire par rapport au quotidien automatisé de la vie moderne et aux questions politiques issues des conflits militaires des années 1930 et 1940 : devant la guerre alors déclenchée, qu’est-ce qu’exercer l’écriture poétique ? Comment cette réunion entre le poète et le vainqueur au pinacle des ultima verba de la deuxième guerre mondiale est-elle possible ? Ce sont les questions qui nous ont engagé dans la composition de l’article.The article analyzes “Ultima Verba”, a text written by Paul Valéry and published in a gaullist weekly immediately after the German surrender. It’s the writer’s singular contribution to the newspaper’s edition that announced the end of the armed conflict in Europe. It’s extremely complex poetic enunciation institutes and pronounces (those that should [not] be) the last words of the war’s winner. Consequently, it establishes a strange celebration that reveals the proximity between the poet and the sovereign in the summit where the ritual of the shared world’s re-foundation is staged. This proximity between the writer and the winner brings into question the act of writing’s pertinence in the midst of the automated modern daily life and the political issues arising from the 1930 and 1940’s military struggles: in the face of the war then launched everywhere, what’s the meaning of the poetic writing’s practice? How is this reunion between the poet and the winner in the pinnacle of the Second World War’s ultima verba possible? These were the questions that engaged us in the composition of the present article.
