Comparisons between translated texts and their originals can give us insight
into the process of manipulation of historical memory in service of a certain ideology. In
this paper, I propose to show the manipulative strategies which were adopted in the
Bulgarian translation of an excerpt from Athenaeus work Deipnosophistae. The translation was made by Stefan Zahariev, a notable figure of the Bulgarians struggle for
cultural emancipation, and was published in the influential magazine Chitalishte in
1871. The translated excerpt describes a sumptuous banquet given by Caranus, a rich
Macedonian who lived in the 3rd century BC. One can easily establish that Zahariev
shaped the readers reception of the text in an attempt to project an idealized image of
the Ancient Macedonians cultural background. By doing so, he intended to boost his
compatriots national consciousness and self-confidence through an example drawn
from the remote past of the Balkans.
