  • In the Classical Age, the concept of fantasy has been subject to a polytropic criticism. In the neoplatonic philosophy of the Renaissance, imagination was conceived of as being of an ontological nature. The phantastikon pneuma of human beings was consubstantial with the universal Anima mundi (the intermediate essence between divine ideas and material nature). The activity of the magicians entailed the ability to project and realize the fantasies through the vis imaginativa. Against this conception fought the doctors of the Church, who have demonized the fantastic mind, as well as the new Cartesian philosophers who treated the imagination as the "mother of all errors." This paper aims to illustrate this evolution of the history of ideas by applying it to the genre of classical utopias. If at the beginning the term utopia described an ideal world, desirable even if impossible to attain, after the attack of the rationalist philosophy it has acquired the sense, still valid today, of impossible dream, pernicious fiction, reprehensible illusion.
