  • One of the main directions in the development of modern ethnomusicology leads to studies of popular culture. This is where the use of traditional music shows a process of transformation, hybridization, reconstruction, and in the same time it is associated with dissemination of pan-regional areas and in some cases in a much wider geographical range. This report presents the personal impressions about the presentations and discussions from the third symposium, “Popular Culture in Turkic Asia and Afghanistan: Performance and Beliefs” of the ICTM Study group for Music of the Turkic Speaking World. The event was held on 1-2 December 2012 in the University of Cambridge, Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies with the collaboration of the Centre for Central Asian Music, UK. The convener of the symposium was Dr Razia Sultanova who is a director of the above mentioned Centre. This review analyzes the themes and issues raised in the reports there in 18 papers and two documentaries by scientists from 12 countries, exhibition “Musical instruments of the Turkic speaking world” and a concert of traditional musicians from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Afghanistan.
