  • The aim of the article is to recreate the fate of the Skierski family on the basis of materials donated to the Museum of Independence in Warsaw by Maria Skierska from Lviv, and indirectly to demonstrate the usefulness of such collections for research on the history of individuals and families. The preserved archives, supplemented by a query in various studies, made it possible to outline the fate of people who are seemingly average, yet contribute a lot to the image of life in the Borderlands. Based on the accumulated knowledge, it was possible to reconstruct the history of the Skierskis and their involvement in the life of Lviv and Poland. The analysis of materials from the family archive, enriched with a query, confirms the belief that museum magazines still hide not only extremely interesting, but also valuable from the point of view of historical research materials, and their use goes far beyond presentation at exhibitions on the borderland. They are the starting point for broader scientific inquiries. Recreating individual beings and the history of families makes it possible to describe the fate of the borderland community in a broader historical perspective. Each such “discovery” of interesting materials in museum collections is an indication of further clues and makes researchers aware of how many materials from museum collections are still to be discovered and processed.
