This book covers all types of catastrophes from high mortality due to various natural disasters, such as epidemics, earthquakes, fire or floods, or face economic decline due to changes in trade routes. Certain political changes, typically accompanied by war, also had a fatal effect on urban people. Enabling students to see what the evidence of catastrophes and its aftermath looks like and what it can tell us about premodern urban society. This volume focuses on all mentioned types of urban disasters in the Middle Ages and Early Modern times engaging interdisciplinary perspectives from history, archaeology, demography and historical geography.
