This chapter focuses on attention as it applies to sport and physical performance. Eklund and Tenenbaum described three types of attention: concentration, selective attention, and divided attention. Concentration refers to the conscious effort of an individual to mentally focus on a stimulus. Selective attention is the ability to select a stimulus for focus in the presence of distractions. Divided attention is the ability to simultaneously focus on two or more things, such as performing two skills simultaneously. The chapter addresses cognitive inhibition by examining the cognitive processes that underlie concentration, selective attention, and divided attention in sports and discusses how these processes are measured and what their implications are for athletes. Such implications include various attention- based methods to identify high- performing athletes and attention training to improve athletic performance. The chapter addresses selected limitations of the current research and applied literature and discusses future areas of needed investigation.
