Systematic measurements of the drag of ribbon-type manipulators have been made in a turbulent boundary layer using a balance specially designed for the purpose. A range of ribbon parameters including ribbon chord, thickness, spacing in tandem configurations, and incidence, as well as ribbon position in the boundary layer, have been considered. Visualization studies of the flow past a thin flat plate have been performed in a water channel by injecting a dye upstream of the plate. The results indicate that the drag of a single ribbon aligned with the flow is due largely to laminar skin friction on its flat sides. The effect of the leading ribbon on the drag coefficient of the trailing ribbon in tandem configurations is found to be small for practical manipulator configurations. The drag coefficient of the ribbon is extremely sensitive to its incidence.
