  • Pupils and students spend more time in front of digital media screens than in the classroom. At the same time, the large majority of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning happens in daily life. However, current research, educational practice, and design of learning systems have their focus mainly on courseware and distance education to support formal learning settings. The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of digital media's alteration mechanism for informal learning in everyday life to enable learners and teachers to choose, combine and apply different mechanism in an appropriate way. For that purpose, 373 informal learning episodes in everyday life of 77 learners a captured by means of videography in the domains of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning. 113 further episodes are currently under review. Autovideography is used based on the day reconstruction method and selected self-monitoring. Additional episodes are captured by researchers applying videography in form of participatory action research in extensive field studies in different cultures. The study identifies 14 mechanisms of digital media and presents a conceptual model of how they affect learning in daily life, including learning context as an intermediate layer. Finally, possible conclusions and consequences for learners, teachers, and other disciplines are discussed.
